Our History

A group of people listening to a museum guide in a gallery with African sculptures and colorful portraits on the wall.

Founded by Lamont Collins in 2020, the Roots 101 African-American Museum is a place where visitors can see themselves in history, explore the African-American story in its entirety, and gain a greater understanding of the achievements, cultural contributions, and experiences of our community.

Our Mission

A tribal mask mounted on a wooden post, with a human skeleton sculpture visible in the background, at an exhibit or museum.

Our mission is to promote understanding & inspire appreciation of the achievements, contributions, and experiences of African Americans, using exhibits, programs, and activities to illustrate African-American history, culture, and art.

Our Vision

A young boy writing in a notebook at a wooden table, with a woman sitting beside him and other children in the background.

Ultimately, our goal is to empower visitors to recognize and appreciate the resilience, creativity, and contributions of African Americans. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages learning, reflection, and connection.
