THE SANKOFA EXPERIENCE

An older Black man and woman dressed in traditional African attire, standing together inside a room with dark wooden furniture and artwork on the walls. The man has a gray beard and is wearing a white and light blue patterned outfit with a matching cap, while the woman is wearing a white and blue dress with a matching headwrap and pearl earrings. They are looking at the camera with neutral to slight smiles.

The Sankofa Players honor the voices of our ancestors through storytelling, music, spoken word, and eye-opening performance.

As they travel across the county sharing the experiences, achievements, and unforgettable stories of those before us, the Sankofa Players embody the true meaning of the Akan concept at it’s core.

“Sankofa” teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. This means that we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward.

From state to state, school to school, university to university, and wherever the story needs to be told, the Sankofa Players are passionately, and purposefully keeping these stories alive.

It is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot
